How to replace an all-terrain tire, tube, or hub on your Evolve board

Most riders assume a flat off-road tire means a trip to a shop or a long wait for a technician. It doesn't have to. Evolve's pneumatic all-terrain wheels are built around a two-piece hub that opens up with a single Allen key, which means a torn tire, a punctured tube, or a cracked hub half is usually a kitchen-table fix rather than a board-out-of-action problem. You just need to understand how the wheel is put together before you start taking it apart.

What's actually inside an all-terrain wheel

The pneumatic all-terrain wheels used on Evolve boards are made up of three separate parts: the tire, the inner tube, and a two-piece hub that clamps around both. The hub halves are held together by six screws that thread into six captured nuts on the opposite half. Each hub half also has a notch cut into it for the tube's valve stem, and those two notches need to line up when you rebuild the wheel.

This design is worth understanding because it means you don't need to replace the whole wheel assembly every time something goes wrong. A worn tire, a punctured tube, and a damaged hub half are three different problems with three different fixes, and the split-hub construction lets you address just the part that failed.

Getting the wheel off the board

Before you can open the hub, the wheel needs to come off the axle. In general terms, this means loosening the axle nut and sliding the wheel free, the same basic approach used across Evolve's belt-driven lineup. Because hardware can vary slightly between models, if anything about your specific board's wheel or axle setup looks different from what you expect, it's worth checking with Evolve support or your local store before pulling it apart.

Once the wheel is off the board, deflate the tube completely before you go anywhere near the hub screws. Trying to separate the hub halves with air still in the tube is how you end up with a pinched tube on reassembly, and it makes the whole job harder than it needs to be.

Opening the hub without losing the nuts

With the wheel flat on a table, use a 1/8-inch Allen key to fully loosen all six hub screws. Leave the screws sitting in the upper hub half where you can, since it keeps things organized and stops small parts rolling off the table. Keep the wheel flat throughout this process. The six nuts on the lower hub half are only captured, not fixed in place, and tipping the wheel on its edge is the easiest way to have one drop out and disappear.

Once the screws are out, separate the upper hub half by working your fingers inside it, then press down on the lower half to release it from the tire. From there the tube pulls straight out. At this point you can decide what actually needs replacing. If the tire is the problem, the tube can often be reused, and vice versa. There isn't a formal wear standard to check against here, so this comes down to your own judgment about whether the part is still fit to ride on.

Getting the tube back in without a repeat puncture

Put a small amount of air into the replacement tube, just enough to give it shape without fully inflating it. Work it evenly into the tire so it sits flush and isn't bunched up anywhere. The part that trips people up is the tube creeping into the area where the hub halves clamp together. If it's sitting in that mating zone when you tighten the hub, you'll pinch it and be right back where you started with a flat tire.

Line up the tube's valve with the notch in the lower hub half, seat the lower half into the tire, then bring the upper half down with its notch aligned to the same valve. Press the two halves together and start the six screws by hand before tightening any of them fully.

Closing the hub evenly

Tighten the six screws gradually in a crisscross pattern rather than working around the wheel in order. This keeps even pressure on the hub as it closes and stops one side clamping down before the other. If a screw spins without biting, stop and check that the captured nut on the other side hasn't dropped out of position. Push it back into its recess before trying the screw again.

Once the hub is fully closed, inflate the tire to 45 PSI. This is the pressure Evolve's own technical material points to for getting the best range out of an all-terrain setup, and it's a good habit to check it before every ride rather than assuming it's held from last time.

Why this matters more if you actually ride off-road

If your riding is limited to sealed bike paths, this whole process is rarely relevant. But if you're taking a board onto fire trails, beach paths, or the kind of broken pavement you find in parts of Austin and Miami, pneumatic all-terrain tires are doing real work, and eventually one of them is going to need attention.
